Immunity & Cancer: Is there a Connection?

When people hear “immune system,” most think about colds and flu. But our immune system does far more. It’s our body’s defense army, constantly patrolling to recognize and destroy what doesn’t belong, from viruses to rogue cells.
Recently, a client asked "can a low immune system cause cancer?"
My reply: a weak immune system doesn’t directly cause cancer, but it does affect the body’s ability to detect and destroy abnormal cells that could develop into cancer.
So let's talk about it.
The Role of the Immune System in Cancer
Every day, our bodies create thousands of abnormal cells. Normally, specialized immune cells (like T-cells and natural killer cells) find and destroy them. This process is called immune surveillance.
If the immune system is weakened — whether by chronic stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, certain medications, or illness — it may not catch these abnormal cells as effectively. Over time, this can increase the chance that some of those cells grow into tumors.
Factors That Can Weaken Immunity
Chronic stress and burnout
Nutrient deficiencies (low vitamin D, zinc, or antioxidants)
Sedentary lifestyle or lack of fresh air
Overexposure to toxins in food, products, or environment
Autoimmune or chronic illnesses
Immunosuppressive drugs (like steroids or chemotherapy)
Holistic Ways to Support Immunity
While I cannot guarantee cancer prevention, I believe it is safe to say that strengthening your immune system is a wise and empowering step. So here are a few ways to support building and/or sustaining your immune health that you can weave into daily life:
Eat with intentions: Eat a rainbow of fruits, vegetables, and whole foods as much as possible to feed your cells.
Get your Rest: Prioritize 7–9 hours of quality sleep; your body heals deeply in rest.
Start Moving your body: Regular walking, stretching, or exercise helps circulation and immune balance.
Everyday Stress release: Prayer, breathwork, journaling, and time in nature lower stress hormones.
Stock up on Herbal allies: Herbs like echinacea, nettle, holy basil and medicinal mushrooms may support resilience.
What does the Word of God say:
Scripture reminds us: “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” (3 John 1:2) Our Creator designed us with a remarkable defense system. Tending to body, mind, and spirit not only strengthens our immunity, but also honors God’s gift of life within us.
The point is...
A low immune system itself doesn’t directly cause cancer, but it can lower the body’s ability to fight off abnormal cells. By supporting immunity through lifestyle, herbs, and spiritual practices, you give your body the best chance to thrive in strength and wholeness.
It is my prayer that during this season of harvest your health and well-being reflects the seeds of faith and wellness that you've planted. Whether you are reading these words and buying your herbs from Amazon, or taking steps for balance and renewal with holistic wellness coaching, you are tending the garden of your soul and body.
With Joy and a Renewed Spirit,
Wynter Michelle
